Breaking a massive document into smaller files takes seconds when you split PDF pages directly in your browser. Upload any multi-page PDF to divide it by custom comma-separated page ranges, slice it at a fixed interval such as every 2 or 5 pages, or burst every single sheet into its own standalone PDF packaged inside a single ZIP download. Every output file preserves selectable vector text and original print formatting.
When dividing a single PDF beats sending the whole file
Accounting and HR systems routinely export batch runs as one giant PDF. When payroll software generates 120 pages containing 60 two-page payslips, you cannot email the master file to individual employees. Splitting that batch at a fixed two-page interval immediately turns the master file into 60 separate two-page PDFs ready for distribution.
Legal discovery and academic research create a different problem: a 90-page scanned binder arrives as one file, but the court filing portal requires Exhibit A (pages 1 to 14), Exhibit B (pages 15 to 38), and the signed affidavit (pages 88 to 90) to be uploaded in separate form slots. Typing those exact ranges into a single comma-separated list slices out all three exhibits in one pass.
Sometimes you simply need to separate a cover letter, an invoice, and a receipt that a scanner bundled into one three-page PDF. Bursting every page into individual files gives you three distinct PDFs packaged in a single ZIP archive without opening and re-saving the file three times.
How to split PDF pages in four steps
- Drop your PDF file into the upload area, or click Select PDF File(s) to load a document from your computer.
- In the left control panel, select one of the three Split Modes: Custom Page Ranges, Fixed Page Interval (Every N), or Burst Every Single Page.
- If using Custom Ranges, type comma-separated segments such as
1-3, 4-7, 8-last; if using Fixed Interval, set the number of pages per output file. - Check the Live Split Manifest on the right to verify the exact page count of each output segment, then click Split & Download to save a single PDF or a bundled
.ziparchive.
What the live split manifest and modes let you do
Splitting a large document blindly often leads to off-by-one page mistakes where the signature page of Contract 1 lands at the top of Contract 2. The workspace is designed so you can inspect the exact cut points before downloading.
- Three dedicated division modes: Switch between Custom Ranges (for uneven chapters like
1-4, 5-12, 13-20), Fixed Interval (for uniform batches of 1, 2, 3, or N pages per document), and Burst All Pages (which turns an N-page PDF into N single-page PDFs). - Live Split Manifest preview: Before you click the main export button, the right-hand panel lists every output file that will be generated, showing its output filename, which source pages it contains, and a mini thumbnail strip of those pages.
- Single-segment instant download: If you load a 50-page PDF and define five custom ranges, you do not have to download the whole ZIP if you only want segment 3 right now. Every card in the Live Split Manifest has its own Download Segment button.
- Smart keyword support in range expressions: Instead of scrolling to the bottom of a long document to check whether it has 84 or 86 pages, use the keyword
last(for example,1-10, 11-last) and the range parser resolves the final page number automatically. - Lossless vector page copying: Rather than rendering pages to images and re-encoding them, the splitter copies native PDF page nodes via
pdf-lib, keeping text searchable and file sizes compact.
Worked example: slicing a 120-page invoice batch
Imagine your billing software exports a monthly batch named April-Client-Invoices.pdf containing 120 pages (total file size: 4.8 MB). Every client invoice is exactly 2 pages long, meaning there are 60 client invoices stacked inside one file.
When you drop April-Client-Invoices.pdf into the workspace and select Fixed Page Interval (Every N) with the interval set to 2:
- The Live Split Manifest calculates 120 รท 2 = 60 output PDF files.
- Segment 1 covers pages
1-2(April-Client-Invoices-part-1-(1-2).pdf), Segment 2 covers pages3-4, and Segment 60 covers pages119-120. - Clicking Split & Download generates all 60 standalone PDFs in memory and packs them into
April-Client-Invoices-split-60-files.zip(approximately 4.9 MB total, since each split file includes its own compact PDF header and cross-reference table). - The entire 60-file ZIP archive builds locally in roughly 1.4 seconds on a standard laptop.
Common range mistakes and shared-resource behavior
The most frequent mistake when splitting reports is relying on the printed page numbers at the bottom of the page rather than the physical PDF page index. Many formal reports start with four pages of Roman-numeral front matter (i, ii, iii, iv) before numbering Chapter 1 as "Page 1" on the fifth physical sheet. Always glance at the thumbnail badges in the Live Split Manifest to confirm that your range starts on the physical sheet you want.
Another detail worth knowing involves shared font subsets. When a 100-page PDF uses an embedded corporate typeface across all pages, the single master file stores that font once. When you burst that 100-page PDF into 100 individual files, pdf-lib copies the required font resources into each output file so every single-page PDF can open independently on any computer. As a result, the sum of 100 split files can weigh slightly more than the original single PDF.
For very large PDFs (over 500 pages) in Burst mode, creating 500 separate PDF objects and zipping them inside browser memory can take 5 to 10 seconds; wait for the green completion banner before closing the tab.
Local browser processing and privacy
All page parsing, range slicing, and ZIP archive compression happen inside your browser tab using pdf-lib, PDF.js, and JSZip. Your source PDF and the split output files are never uploaded to a remote server or cached in cloud storage. Encrypted PDFs can be unlocked locally in memory prior to splitting.
