Sharing a 240-character Google Docs link, an Amazon product URL packed with tracking parameters, or a campaign link with five utm_ tags breaks across SMS lines, looks untrustworthy in emails, and creates dense, hard-to-scan QR codes. This custom URL shortener turns unwieldy web addresses into compact, fast-redirecting edge links - letting you pick your own custom alias (or generate a random slug), check availability live, download a matching QR code, and inspect click statistics without creating an account.

When a clean short link with a custom slug makes all the difference

Long URLs fail most often in places where people have to read, type, or scan them quickly:

  • Slide decks, webinars, and stage presentations: Putting s.shifttools.in/q4-deck on a projector screen so 200 attendees in the room can type it on their laptops in three seconds instead of squinting at a 64-character random Google Drive hash.
  • Printed flyers, posters, and packaging QR codes: Encoding a 22-character short link into a QR code instead of a 190-character UTM link - reducing the QR grid density from a tiny 77×77 module matrix down to a bold, easy-to-scan 25×25 matrix.
  • SMS, WhatsApp, and social bios: Sharing a clean, readable slug (/menu-2026, /register-blr) that tells people what they are clicking before they tap it.
  • Checking whether anyone actually clicked your shared link: Looking up the live click counter and creation metadata for any short slug directly from the Analytics / Stats Lookup tab.

Creating and tracking a short link step by step

  1. Paste your destination URL: Enter the full https://... destination link into the main URL field.
  2. Choose a Custom Alias (or leave blank for random): Type a memorable custom slug (3–30 alphanumeric characters and hyphens, such as launch-demo) and watch the live availability indicator confirm whether the slug is free.
  3. Click Shorten URL: The edge worker registers your route in Cloudflare KV storage and returns your live short link immediately.
  4. Copy the link or download its QR code: Click Copy Short URL or save the automatically generated QR code for print and mobile sharing.
  5. Check Click Analytics anytime: Switch to the Link Analytics tab, enter your short link or slug, and view total clicks, target destination, and creation timestamp.

Features built into the edge link manager

Real-time custom slug availability checker

Instead of filling out a form and getting an error after submitting, typing a custom alias queries the edge index (/api/links/check) with debounced validation - telling you right away if product-demo is available or already taken.

Edge KV storage for sub-50ms global redirects

When someone clicks your short link, they shouldn't wait two seconds for a cold-booting database server on the other side of the world. Short links are stored in globally distributed Cloudflare Workers KV at the network edge, serving HTTP 301 / 302 redirects from the data center closest to the visitor.

Built-in QR code & local link history

Every shortened URL comes with an instant scannable QR code and is saved to your browser's local history list on your device so you can revisit, copy, or check the click count of your previously created links without needing a user account.

A real example: shortening a 186-character UTM campaign URL for an event poster

Suppose you are printing posters for a developer meetup in Bengaluru and your registration link with analytics parameters is 186 characters long:

https://events.example.org/workshops/2026/autumn-cloud-native-summit-bengaluru/register?utm_source=poster_qr&utm_medium=print_A3&utm_campaign=blr_oct_2026&utm_content=lobby_standee
  1. Paste the 186-character URL into the Custom URL Shortener.
  2. In the Custom Alias box, type blr-summit-26. The live checker confirms blr-summit-26 is available.
  3. Click Shorten URL. Your link shrinks from 186 characters down to 32 characters (an 82.8% length reduction).
  4. Both the human-readable text link on the poster and the accompanying QR code now route cleanly to the full UTM-tagged destination while tracking total scan/click volume in the Analytics tab.

Practical tips, rules, and limitations

  • Allowed custom alias characters: Custom slugs accept letters (a–z, A–Z), numbers (0–9), hyphens (-), and underscores (_), between 3 and 30 characters long. Spaces and special punctuation (/, ?, &, #) are not allowed in the slug itself.
  • No malicious, phishing, or self-recursive links: Destination URLs must use valid http:// or https:// protocols and cannot point back to the shortener domain itself (loop prevention) or known phishing/malware blocklists.

Privacy and data handling transparency

Unlike local file converters, a URL shortener must store the mapping between your short slug and your destination URL on a server so other people on the internet can be redirected when they click it. When you create or look up a link, your browser sends the destination URL and custom slug to https://api.shifttools.in/api/links (backed by Cloudflare Edge KV). Your personal recent-links list is stored locally in your own browser's localStorage.

Best practices for naming memorable custom link aliases

When creating a custom slug for a presentation slide, podcast shoutout, or printed brochure, a few simple formatting habits increase click-through rates and prevent typing errors:

  • Use lowercase words separated by hyphens (q4-roadmap, menu-pdf): All-lowercase slugs with a single hyphen are effortless to read from across a conference room and avoid confusion between uppercase I and lowercase l.
  • Keep aliases between 5 and 16 characters: A 3-character random code (x9q) is hard to remember verbally, while a 28-character sentence defeats the purpose of shortening. Two short words (demo-2026, join-beta) hit the sweet spot for human memory.
  • Pair print links with a high-contrast QR code: Always place the readable short URL (s.shifttools.in/blr-26) directly beneath the QR code on printed flyers so people on laptops can type the link and people on phones can scan the square.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my own custom words at the end of the short link?

Yes. Enter any available 3- to 30-character alphanumeric word or hyphenated phrase in the Custom Alias field before clicking Shorten. If you leave the alias field empty, the tool generates a compact random slug automatically.

Do I need to sign up or log in to create short links and view click stats?

No account is required. You can shorten links immediately, and your browser keeps a convenient local history of the links you created on your device so you can check their click counts anytime.

How do I check how many clicks my short link has received?

Switch to the Analytics / Track Clicks tab inside the tool, paste your short URL (or just the slug code), and click Check Stats to see the total click count, original destination URL, and creation date.

Why should I shorten a long URL before turning it into a QR code?

The number of tiny black-and-white squares in a QR code grows with every character in the URL. A 200-character URL produces a dense, crowded QR pattern that is harder for phone cameras to scan from a distance or on small labels, whereas a 25-character short URL produces a bold, sparse QR pattern that scans effortlessly.

Will my URL query parameters (like ?utm_source=...) still work after shortening?

Yes. When a visitor clicks your short link, the edge redirect forwards them to the exact full destination URL you submitted, including all query parameters and hash fragments.

Can I delete or edit a custom alias after it has been created?

To ensure links shared on printed materials or public posts remain stable and cannot be hijacked by another anonymous visitor, public short slugs are locked to their destination URL once created.
