Take a screenshot on your computer, press Ctrl + V right on this page, and start marking it up immediately with zero uploads. This browser-based screenshot annotator combines vector Arrows, Numbered Step Badges (1, 2, 3), Rectangles, Text Callouts, Freehand Highlighters, and irreversible Gaussian Blur / Mosaic Pixelation redaction with a beautiful macOS-style window frame and gradient studio backdrop for documentation and bug reports.

Two jobs every screenshot needs: clear direction and secret redaction

Whenever you paste a full-screen capture into a GitHub issue, Slack channel, customer support ticket, or documentation article, two problems show up immediately:

  1. The viewer does not know where to look: A 1920×1080 dashboard has forty buttons and menus on screen. Placing numbered step badges (1, 2, 3) paired with high-contrast arrows and a short text label turns a wall of UI into a 3-second visual instruction.
  2. Private data is sitting in the background: Browser screenshots almost always capture an email address in the top-right profile corner, an API key or customer ID in a table row, or other browser tabs you did not mean to share. Dragging a Mosaic Pixelate or Gaussian Blur box over those coordinates obscures the sensitive pixels before the image ever leaves your browser.

How to use the screenshot annotator step by step

  1. Press Ctrl + V (Cmd + V on Mac) to paste a screenshot straight from your clipboard, or drag a PNG, JPG, or WebP file into the canvas.
  2. Pick an annotation tool from the top toolbar: Select / Move (V), Arrow (A), Rectangle / Circle (R), Text Callout (T), Numbered Step Counter (N), Highlighter / Pen (P), Blur / Pixelate Redact (B), or Crop (C).
  3. Click or drag on the screenshot to place objects. Because shapes, arrows, and text are editable vector objects, you can switch to the Select tool at any time to move, resize, recolor, or delete any placed item.
  4. Optionally wrap your screenshot in a Studio Padding Backdrop (Gradient or Solid color with rounded corners, macOS window traffic-light header, and drop shadow) in the right sidebar, then click Copy Flattened PNG or Download PNG / JPG / WebP (1x or 2x Retina).

Editable object layer, numbered step counters, blur/pixelate, and studio frames

Unlike basic paint programs that permanently fuse every line into the background the moment you release the mouse button, this workspace maintains an interactive object stack with full Undo/Redo history.

  • Non-destructive Select, Move & Resize engine: Placed an arrow slightly off-target or made a callout box too narrow? Click any arrow, rectangle, text label, or step badge to drag its endpoints, change its stroke color, adjust its font size, or delete it.
  • Auto-incrementing Step Badges (1, 2, 3...): Select the Step Counter tool and click four times across your UI to stamp cleanly styled circular step markers 1, 2, 3, and 4 in sequence for software tutorials.
  • Three Redaction modes (Pixelate, Blur, Solid Blackout): Drag over any email, password, or account balance using Mosaic Pixelation (adjustable block size), Gaussian Blur, or Solid Blackout. On export, all redaction regions are permanently flattened into the output bitmap.
  • Beautifier Studio Frame & Padding: Turn a raw cropped rectangle into a polished changelog or social graphic by adding outer gradient padding, adjustable border radius, a dark/light Browser Window Header with traffic-light dots, and a soft elevation shadow.
  • One-click Clipboard Copy (Copy Flattened PNG): Writes the finished image straight back to your system clipboard via navigator.clipboard.write so you can press Ctrl + V into Slack, Discord, Linear, or GitHub without even saving a file to your Downloads folder.

Worked example: marking up a dashboard bug report in 20 seconds

Suppose you are filing a bug report on a billing dashboard and capture a 1440 × 900 px screenshot onto your clipboard:

  1. You press Ctrl + V on this page; the 1440 × 900 image loads onto the stage immediately.
  2. You select the Blur / Pixelate tool (Mosaic Pixelate, 14px block size) and drag two rectangles over the customer email column and the Stripe live key prefix in the header.
  3. You switch to the Numbered Step Counter and click on the Filter Dropdown (1), the Export CSV Button (2), and the Error Toast (3), then draw a crimson Arrow pointing to the toast message with the text callout 500 Timeout when filter > 90 days.
  4. You click Copy Flattened PNG in the right sidebar and press Ctrl + V directly inside your Linear/GitHub ticket. The recipient sees a crisp, self-explanatory visual guide where the customer PII pixels are completely destroyed.

Security tip: Blur vs. Mosaic Pixelation vs. Solid Blackout

When hiding sensitive information inside a screenshot, choose the right redaction mode for the threat level:

  • Gaussian Blur and Mosaic Pixelation look clean and unobtrusive in public documentation, blog posts, and product screenshots where you just want to hide a test username or internal URL without drawing an ugly black bar across the UI.
  • Solid Blackout is the safest choice for high-security secrets (such as plaintext passwords, recovery seeds, or credit card numbers). Academic research has shown that light Gaussian blur or very fine pixelation on known monospace fonts can sometimes be partially guessed by deconvolution; using a large mosaic block size (16px+) or Solid Blackout eliminates any pattern reconstruction.

100% local clipboard and browser privacy

Screenshots of internal admin panels, source code, and customer support tickets should never be uploaded to a public cloud screenshot host. Everything you paste, draw, blur, and copy happens 100% locally in your browser's HTML5 Canvas memory.

Why pixelate/mosaic and solid redaction bars beat light Gaussian blur for secrets

When sharing bug screenshots that contain API keys, email addresses, credit card digits, or database URLs, how you obscure the text matters:

  • The danger of light Gaussian blur on high-contrast text: If you apply a mild blur over crisp black-on-white monospace characters, security researchers (and automated deconvolution scripts) can reconstruct the original characters by testing candidate strings blurred with the same radius until the pixel gradients match.
  • Use heavy Pixelation (Mosaic) or opaque filled rectangles for credentials: Large-block pixelation destroys character-width and stroke frequency entirely, and an opaque solid rectangle over a password or token leaves zero underlying luminance data to reverse-engineer. Use soft blur for de-emphasizing background UI clutter, and use heavy pixelation or solid fills for true secrets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I paste a screenshot straight from my keyboard without saving it as a file first?

Yes! Press PrintScreen (or Win + Shift + S on Windows / Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 4 on Mac) to copy any screen region to your clipboard, then press Ctrl + V (or Cmd + V) anywhere on this page to open it on the canvas immediately.

Can I move or resize an arrow or text box after I draw it?

Yes. Every arrow, rectangle, highlight, step badge, and text callout is stored as an independent vector object on the canvas. Switch to the Select tool (at the left of the toolbar) to click, drag, resize, recolor, or delete any item.

Can someone un-blur or remove a pixelation box from the downloaded PNG?

When you click Download or Copy Flattened PNG, all layers are flattened into a single raster bitmap where the original pixels underneath the blur, pixelation, or blackout box are permanently overwritten.

How do the numbered step badges (1, 2, 3) work?

Select the Step Counter tool in the toolbar and click anywhere on your screenshot. Your first click places a circular badge labeled 1, your second click places 2, your third places 3, and so on - making step-by-step software guides effortless.

How do I add a gradient background and browser window frame around my screenshot?

In the right-hand sidebar under Canvas & Frame Styling, increase the Outer Padding slider, pick a Gradient or Solid backdrop preset, and toggle the Window Header (macOS dots) and Drop Shadow switches.

What does the 2x Retina HD export option do?

Selecting 2x Retina HD renders your vector arrows, text callouts, step badges, and window frames at double pixel density so typography stays razor-sharp when viewed on 4K monitors and MacBook Retina displays.
