Before circulating a draft contract, financial deck, or proprietary manual, you can add a watermark to PDF pages directly in your browser without uploading sensitive files. Stamp custom text such as CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT, or overlay your transparent PNG company seal at the center, corners, or in a repeating diagonal mosaic across the entire sheet. A live page canvas shows your exact opacity, rotation angle, and placement before you export.
When a visible watermark protects shared PDFs
Sending an unmarked draft proposal or pre-release price list over email makes it easy for recipients to confuse an early draft with a final signed agreement. A subtle diagonal DRAFT - FOR REVIEW ONLY watermark across the page body leaves no ambiguity when someone prints a single sheet two weeks later.
When sharing pitch decks, architectural drawings, or audit reports with prospective buyers or third-party vendors, stamping the recipient's name or CONFIDENTIAL - DO NOT DISTRIBUTE in a repeating mosaic tile across every page discourages casual screenshots and unauthorized forwarding. Because a mosaic grid repeats across the top, middle, and bottom of the sheet, cropping the edges of a screenshot cannot remove the notice.
Skipping the cover page is another practical touch: when a report has a full-bleed designed title page on Page 1, starting the watermark on Page 2 keeps the cover clean while marking every content page inside.
How to add a watermark to PDF pages
- Drop your PDF file into the upload zone or click Select PDF File(s) to open the live preview canvas.
- In the left sidebar, choose Text Watermark (and type your message, font size, and HEX color) or Image Logo (and select a PNG or JPG logo from your device).
- Pick a Placement Mode: Center, one of the four Corners (Top-Left, Top-Right, Bottom-Left, Bottom-Right), or Diagonal Tile Mosaic.
- Adjust the Opacity (5% to 100%) and Rotation Angle (-90° to +90°) sliders, set the Target Pages scope (All Pages, Skip First Page, or Custom Range), and click Apply Watermark & Download PDF.
Typography, logo blending, and mosaic tiling controls
A good document watermark should be unmistakable to the reader without making the underlying 10-point body text hard to read.
- Dual Text & Transparent Logo modes: Stamp vector typography using standard PDF fonts or embed a transparent PNG/JPG company emblem that scales proportionally to each page's width.
- 6 placement presets including Diagonal Tile Mosaic: Place a single stamp at the center or any corner, or choose Diagonal Tile Mosaic to stamp a 3x3 repeating grid across the full height and width of the page.
- Fine-grained Opacity & Angle sliders: Dial opacity down to 12%–20% for subtle background watermarks that do not obscure tables, and set any rotation angle between -90° and +90° (with -35° as the classic diagonal default).
- Skip Cover Page & Custom Range targeting: Apply the watermark to every page, skip Page 1 automatically with Skip Cover Page (2 to End), or type a custom range such as
2-15, 20. - Real-time HTML5 Canvas preview: Every change to text, logo, color, opacity, or angle renders live on the current page preview so you never have to guess how 18% opacity looks against your document.
Worked example: stamping a 30-page investment memo
Suppose you are preparing Series-A-DataRoom-Memo.pdf (30 pages, 4,100 KB) to share with an external advisor. Page 1 is a dark navy cover page, and Pages 2 through 30 are white-background financial projections.
To mark the interior pages without ruining the dark cover:
- You select Text Watermark and type
CONFIDENTIAL · ACME CAPITAL. - You set Placement to Diagonal Tile Mosaic, Rotation to
-35°, Font Size to28 pt, Color to Slate Gray (#475569), and Opacity to16%. - Under Target Pages, you choose Skip Cover Page (Page 2 to End), which targets 29 pages (Pages 2–30) and leaves Page 1 untouched.
- Clicking Apply Watermark & Download PDF writes the vector text stamps onto all 29 interior pages in 0.5 seconds. Because vector text instructions take almost no space, the output file size increases by only 14 KB (from 4,100 KB to 4,114 KB).
Tips and honest limits of PDF watermarks
For text-heavy documents with black ink on white paper, an opacity setting between 12% and 22% in a medium slate or crimson tone gives the best balance: the watermark is clearly visible on screen and in print, yet numbers inside spreadsheet tables remain easy to read. Going above 40% opacity across the center of a page will make small body text difficult to scan.
Also understand the security difference between a vector overlay watermark and a flattened page: this tool stamps vector text or image objects onto the PDF page stream so your file stays small and your document text remains selectable. However, a determined user with a commercial PDF object editor can select and delete a separate vector overlay object. If you need a watermark that is permanently fused into the page pixels so it cannot be removed by an object editor, pass the watermarked PDF through the PDF Protect tool with Flatten Text Layers enabled (or compress at 144 DPI in PDF Compress).
Local browser processing
Both your PDF document and any PNG/JPG company logo you load stay 100% inside your browser's local memory. PDF.js renders the live preview canvas and pdf-lib embeds the watermark objects locally with zero server uploads.
Choosing opacity, angle, and color for readable yet tamper-resistant watermarks
A well-designed watermark is unmistakable at a glance without making the underlying contract clauses or financial numbers hard to read:
- Opacity between
15%and28%: Setting opacity to80%turns the watermark into a solid bar that obscures 10-point body text behind it. Setting opacity around18% to 25%lets dark black body ink read cleanly right through the translucent stamp while still appearing clearly on every printed or photocopied sheet. - 45-degree diagonal stretch across the page center: A horizontal stamp in the top margin can be cropped off in five seconds using any margin cropper. Running a
-45°diagonal watermark across the center of the text block forces the stamp to cross dozens of lines of body text, making it impossible to crop out without destroying the document.
