PDF Form Filler & Flattener

Fill interactive AcroForm PDF fields or click anywhere on flat scanned PDFs to add text, checkmarks (✓), crosses (✗), and dates in your browser.

Interactive Tool Workspace

Government agencies, clinics, and HR departments hand out two kinds of PDF forms: true interactive AcroForms with clickable input boxes, and flat "print-and-fill" PDFs where nobody bothered to add form fields at all. Here you can fill PDF forms online of both types in one workspace - edit detected interactive text fields and checkboxes in a clean sidebar, click anywhere on a flat page to stamp text, checkmarks (✓), crosses (✗), or dates, and flatten the finished form before downloading.

Why you need both an AcroForm reader and a freeform page stamper

If you have ever opened an HR onboarding packet, insurance claim, or school permission slip in a standard browser tab only to discover you cannot click on the blank lines to type your name, you have run into a flat PDF. The author designed the lines in Word or InDesign and exported a static PDF without creating interactive AcroForm widgets. Normally, that forces you to print the PDF on paper, fill it out with a pen, and scan it back in with your phone.

On the flip side, official tax forms (like a W-9 or 1099) and bank applications do contain embedded AcroForm text fields and checkboxes, where you want your typed values to snap neatly inside the official field boundaries - and then flatten those fields on export so the recipient cannot accidentally alter your answers or see editable blue boxes.

Combining automatic AcroForm field extraction with a click-to-place freeform canvas stamper means you never care how the form was originally authored: if it has real fields, they appear in the left editor; if a line has no field, you just click on the line and type.

How to fill PDF forms online and flatten your entries

  1. Drop your PDF form into the upload box, or click Load Sample PDF to test immediately with a built-in interactive vendor onboarding form.
  2. If the PDF contains interactive AcroForm fields, type your answers or toggle checkboxes in the Detected Form Fields list in the left panel.
  3. To type on a flat PDF (or add extra notes anywhere), pick a Freeform Stamp Tool (Text Label, Checkmark ✓, Cross ✗, or Today's Date), set your font size and color, and click directly on the page preview canvas where you want it placed.
  4. Keep Flatten Form Fields on Export checked so your entries are locked into the page stream, then click Save & Download Filled PDF.

Interactive field parsing, freeform stamps, and flattening

The workspace inspects the document's internal form catalog as soon as you drop the file and gives you complete control over both structured fields and canvas annotations.

  • Automatic AcroForm introspection: Uses pdf-lib's getForm().getFields() API to enumerate every PDFTextField, PDFCheckBox, PDFDropdown, and PDFRadioGroup in the document, binding each field to an instant input control.
  • Click-anywhere freeform page stamping: Select Text, ✓ Check, ✗ Cross, or ISO Date (YYYY-MM-DD), customize font size (8 pt to 28 pt) and ink color (Black, Navy Blue ink, or Crimson), and click any coordinate on any page to place crisp vector text.
  • Per-stamp management: Placed a checkmark two millimeters too high? Every freeform stamp on the current page is listed in the sidebar with a one-click Remove button so you can re-click the exact spot.
  • One-click AcroForm flattening: Enabling Flatten Form executes form.flatten() during export, converting interactive text boxes and checkboxes into static vector page graphics so recipients cannot edit your submitted numbers.
  • Direct handoff to PKI PDF Signer: Once your form fields and dates are filled in, click Open in PDF Signer in the post-export bar to draw a wet-ink signature or apply a cryptographic .pfx digital certificate.

Worked example: completing a vendor W-9 and bank authorization packet

Suppose a new client sends you a 2-page Vendor-Setup-Packet.pdf (310 KB):

  • Page 1 is a standard interactive AcroForm with 8 fields (Legal Business Name, Tax ID / EIN, Billing Address, Contact Email, and 4 classification checkboxes).
  • Page 2 is a scanned flat ACH direct-deposit sheet with blank lines for Bank Name, Routing Number, Account Number, a checkbox for Checking Account, and a Date line - none of which have interactive form fields.

Inside the workspace:

  1. On Page 1, the sidebar automatically lists all 8 interactive AcroForm fields. You fill in your business name, EIN, address, and check the LLC box.
  2. You switch the preview to Page 2, select the Text Stamp tool (12 pt Navy Blue ink #1e3a8a), and click on the three blank lines to place your Bank Name, 9-digit Routing Number, and Account Number.
  3. You switch the stamp tool to Checkmark (✓) and click inside the Checking box, then select Today's Date and click on the date line.
  4. With Flatten Form Fields on Export checked, you click Save & Download Filled PDF.

The exported Vendor-Setup-Packet-filled.pdf (324 KB) has both the Page 1 AcroForm fields and the Page 2 freeform stamps permanently locked into clean vector page content.

Tips for XFA forms, font styling, and signatures

Most interactive PDFs on the web use the standard AcroForm specification, which this tool reads and flattens natively. Occasionally, certain legacy government forms (such as older Canadian immigration forms or dynamic IRS forms) use a proprietary Adobe technology called LiveCycle XFA (XML Forms Architecture). Because XFA forms wrap an XML application inside a shell PDF, standard PDF parsers only see the fallback page; if you need to fill a static copy of a form like that, use the Freeform Text & Checkmark Stamp mode right on the canvas.

When filling flat forms that mimic paper documents, setting the freeform ink color to Dark Navy (#1e3a8a) at 11 pt or 12 pt makes your typed entries and ✓ checkmarks stand out clearly from the black printed form labels, just like blue ballpoint ink on paper.

Privacy for tax, medical, and financial forms

Forms almost always ask for your most sensitive personal data: tax IDs, bank account numbers, home addresses, and medical history. In this workspace, every keystroke, field value, and exported PDF stays 100% inside your browser's local memory with zero server uploads.

Related PDF signing and security tools

After filling out your form, add a drawn signature, company seal, or X.509 digital certificate in the PDF Signer & Validator. If you need to mask an ID number on an attached KYC sheet, open the ID & Aadhaar Masker or PDF Redactor, or combine your completed form with supporting receipts in PDF Merge & Combiner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I type on a scanned PDF form that has no clickable text boxes?

Use the Freeform Page Stamp section in the left sidebar. Select Text Label, type what you want to enter, choose your font size and color, and click directly on the blank line in the right-hand page preview canvas.

What does Flatten Form Fields on Export actually do?

When a PDF form is left unflattened, anyone who opens the file can click inside the text boxes and change your answers. Flattening converts all interactive text fields, dropdowns, and checkboxes into static page graphics so your entries are permanently locked.

How do I put a checkmark (✓) or cross (✗) inside a tiny checkbox on a flat PDF?

In the Freeform Stamp toolbar, switch the tool mode from Text to Check (✓) or Cross (✗). Then click right inside the square box on the live page preview canvas to place a crisp checkmark at that exact coordinate.

What if I click in the wrong spot when placing a text stamp or checkmark?

Every stamp you place on the current page appears in the Placed Annotations list in the left panel. Click the Remove button next to the last stamp to delete it immediately and click the right spot.

Are my typed Social Security Numbers or bank details sent to any server?

Never. All AcroForm parsing, freeform text rendering, and PDF flattening execute locally inside your browser tab using pdf-lib and PDF.js. Nothing you type ever leaves your device.

Can I sign the PDF after filling out the form fields?

You can stamp your name and date directly on the signature line here, or click the Open in PDF Signer handoff button after exporting to draw a freehand signature or attach a cryptographic .pfx/.p12 digital certificate.
