Academic papers, textbooks, and UPS or Amazon shipping labels often waste 30% to 50% of every sheet on wide white margins or empty half-pages. You can crop PDF pages right in your browser by dragging a visual selection box directly on the live page preview or dialing in exact Top, Bottom, Left, and Right percentages. Apply your crop across all pages, only the current page, or choose between lossless vector CropBox adjustment and hard-flattened cropping.

When trimming PDF margins makes documents far easier to use

Reading an A4 or US Letter academic paper on a 6-inch Kindle, Kobo, or 10-inch iPad is frustrating when 1.25-inch white margins surround the text on all four sides. Because the e-reader scales the entire page to fit the screen, the actual body font shrinks to a tiny, unreadable size. Trimming 12% to 15% off the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margins lets the text column fill the entire tablet display, making the letters roughly 35% larger without reflowing a single formula or chart.

E-commerce sellers and warehouse shippers face a different daily chore: carrier portals frequently generate a single 8.5 x 11 inch PDF page where the 4 x 6 inch shipping label occupies only the top half (or left half) of the sheet, while the bottom half is a tear-off receipt or blank space. Selecting the Top Half Label preset and cropping Page 1 isolates just the 4 x 6 label so it prints cleanly on a thermal label printer.

Trimming the top or bottom 5% of a document is also the fastest way to slice off old running headers, watermarks, or conflicting page numbers before re-numbering a merged packet.

How to crop PDF pages in four steps

  1. Drop your PDF file into the upload box or click Select PDF File(s) to render the interactive crop canvas.
  2. Click and drag a rectangle directly on the page preview canvas, pick a one-click preset (Trim 8% Margins, E-Reader 15% Trim, Top Half Only, Bottom Half Only), or adjust the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right percentage sliders in the sidebar.
  3. Choose the Page Scope (All Pages or Current Page Only) and the Crop Method (Vector CropBox/MediaBox or Hard Flatten Crop).
  4. Click Crop & Download PDF to save your trimmed document.

Visual canvas overlay and dual crop engines

Many online croppers force you to guess margin measurements in millimeters or points without showing what you are cutting off, or only modify the PDF CropBox metadata so hidden content outside the box can still be recovered. This workspace gives you visual precision and both technical crop modes.

  • Interactive drag-to-crop canvas: A semi-transparent dark mask shades the trimmed margins while a dashed blue boundary frames the kept region in real time. Dragging a rectangle on the page automatically calculates the corresponding Top, Bottom, Left, and Right percentages.
  • One-click e-reader and label presets: Jump straight to 8% Standard Trim, 15% Tablet/Kindle Trim, Top Half (50% Bottom Trim), or Bottom Half (50% Top Trim), or click Reset 0% to start fresh.
  • All Pages vs. Current Page targeting: Trim uniform margins across a 200-page book at once, or select Current Page Only when you only need to crop a diagram or shipping label on Page 1.
  • Lossless Vector CropBox vs. Hard Flatten Crop: Choose Vector CropBox to update the native PDF setCropBox and setMediaBox coordinates instantaneously while keeping vector text selectable and file size tiny. Choose Hard Flatten Crop when you want pixels outside the crop boundary permanently discarded so nobody can expand the MediaBox back out.

Worked example: trimming a 32-page journal paper for an iPad

Suppose you download a 32-page computer science paper (Paper-Preprint.pdf, 1,840 KB) formatted on US Letter pages (612 x 792 points). Around the text sits an 85-point (~14%) blank margin on all four sides, meaning the actual text block only occupies 442 x 622 points in the center of the sheet.

  1. You load Paper-Preprint.pdf and click the E-Reader 15% Trim preset (or set Top: 14%, Bottom: 14%, Left: 14%, Right: 14%).
  2. On the live preview canvas, the dashed blue crop box hugs the two-column text and equations tightly across all pages.
  3. You leave Page Scope on All Pages and Crop Method on Lossless Vector CropBox, then click Crop & Download PDF.
  4. In 0.25 seconds, pdf-lib updates the CropBox and MediaBox on all 32 pages to 440.6 x 570.2 points. When opened on a tablet, the text renders 38% larger edge-to-edge while keeping 100% vector font sharpness and the exact same 1,840 KB file size.

Critical difference between Vector CropBox and Hard Flatten

Understanding how PDF viewers handle cropped pages saves you from accidental data leaks:

In Lossless Vector CropBox mode, the tool changes the visible viewport rectangle (CropBox and MediaBox) stored on the page object. Every PDF viewer and printer will display and print only the area inside your crop box, and all text inside remains crisp and selectable. However, the drawing commands outside that rectangle still exist inside the file stream - meaning someone with a PDF editor could reset the MediaBox back to [0, 0, 612, 792] and see the trimmed margin again.

Therefore, never use Vector CropBox mode as a security redaction method to hide confidential account numbers or names sitting in the margin. If you are cropping out sensitive information and need the outside area permanently destroyed, select Hard Flatten Crop (or use the PDF Redactor), which renders only the cropped rectangle into a brand-new bitmap so nothing outside the box exists in the output file.

Local browser processing

All page rendering, crop boundary calculations, and PDF reconstruction happen 100% locally in your browser using PDF.js and pdf-lib. Your documents are never uploaded to any external server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cropping a PDF in Vector CropBox mode make the text blurry?

No. Vector CropBox mode only updates the coordinate boundaries of the page viewport (MediaBox and CropBox) without re-encoding fonts or vector graphics, so text stays 100% razor-sharp at any zoom level.

When should I choose Hard Flatten Crop instead of Vector CropBox?

Choose Hard Flatten Crop when you want everything outside your crop rectangle permanently erased from the file - for example, when cutting out a receipt or shipping label and ensuring the rest of the page cannot be restored in a PDF editor.

How do I crop a 4x6 shipping label that sits on the top half of a letter-sized PDF?

Upload your label PDF, click the Top Half Only preset in the left sidebar (which sets Bottom margin trim to 50%), set Page Scope to Current Page Only, and export. The resulting page will contain only the top half.

Can I draw the crop box with my mouse instead of moving sliders?

Yes. Click and drag directly on the live page preview canvas in the right panel. When you release the mouse button, the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margin percentages update automatically to match the box you drew.

Will cropping all pages work if my PDF has both portrait and landscape pages?

Because the margin controls use relative percentages (0% to 45% of each page’s own width and height) rather than fixed pixel offsets, applying a 10% margin trim scales proportionally across every page dimension.

Can I undo my crop box if I trim too much off the edge?

Click the Reset Margins (0%) button in the sidebar at any time to restore the full uncropped page frame immediately.
